For many years I have been pre-occupied with producing large scale paintings – the 'subject matter' directly related to the experience of listening to music and/or a fascination with shrines and places of worship. In my most recent smaller scale works I have returned to a much earlier love of interiors, still-life and works with a sense of place – albeit in a more abstracted form. This approach is not a million miles away from the early cubists (100 years ago!) who would dismantle the subject and then put it back together again in their own way – the resulting ambiguity and freedom being the great reward – yet all the while retaining the strong sense of subject. Obviously, colour and colour relationships are crucial to all this. An abiding passion no less. During a recent visit to Australia (where I trained) I saw a painting which was informed by a prodigious energy and despite obvious borrowings, impressed me tremendously. Upon my return to the UK,I have produced new work or re-worked existing paintings as a result of this encounter. The painting, of course, was one of mine, produced 40 years ago. |
